I am a past commodore (I know, woah!!) and still involved with the Boat Club and I can address Paul’s question. The felling of the tree, deemed inevitable, was nonetheless discussed at the club Annual meeting and the membership, who valued viewing our local raptors, perhaps, more than our birders, understood the need. I don’t think there is space for new planting in the small footprint exposed, but I expect the younger trees which served as ‘understory’ to the Tree will rise to replace the canopy deficit.
