Weather: Sunny with some midday clouds. Calm winds became a moderately strong northwest wind following the passage of a cold front. Temps reaching the low 70s.
Raptor Observations: A moderate migration, but quite a few good looks throughout the day and a lot of activity overall. Just over a hundred migrants, with about half of those being vultures.
A lot of Bald Eagle activity with 11 migrating. Seven harriers was the highest total in several weeks. A dozen sharpies and six Coops. A handful of Buteos with 7 red-shoulders and 9 red-tails migrating. The only falcon was a Merlin that was diving at a juvenile red-shouldered hawk.
Non-raptor Observations: 165 Canada Geese, Common Loon, Belted Kingfisher, 4 Common Ravens, 50 Tree Swallows, 6 Purple Finches, 50 Pine Siskins, 2 monarchs. https://ebird.org/checklist/S406684869
Predictions: TOMORROW: Generally sunny with a few afternoon clouds. Cooler. High 61F. Winds NNW at 5-10mph. A good wind though perhaps a bit weak. Overnight migration could carry into a decent songbird morning flight, and hopefully today's winds moved some raptors into position for us to see. Maybe the hoped for Golden Eagle that never materialized today will show up. Wear a costume to bring good luck. Expect moderate migration.
SUNDAY: Cloudy. High 62F. Winds light and variable. Expect light to moderate migration.
MONDAY: Mix of sun and clouds. High 66F. Winds light and variable. Expect light to moderate migration. ======================================================================== Report submitted by David Brown (<davidebrownpa...>) Ashland Nature Center information may be found at: www.delnature.org
