I birded the State Park this morning and saw 49 species in a little over two hours. I spent the bulk of the time on the overflow parking road, but also checked out the campground and beach areas, the group camp site and even walked a short portion of the now-abandoned bike trail.
The leaking water pump and quince trees along the overflow road had the most birds. The Chestnut-sided Warbler is apparently gone, but I refound the Nashville Warbler along with more common warbler species in the trees. The big surprise was a single Red-Crossbill that landed in the dead branches at the top of a Eucalyptus tree. It appeared to be a young male bird. It stayed there calling its distinctive "jip-jip" call for almost 10 minutes before it finally flew off, perhaps in search of others. Other surprise was a female Bullock's oriole feeding on the fruit of a Catalina Cherry tree at Campsite 15. There were Red-breasted Nuthatches in pines at two different locations.
Mot much of interest in the stream or beach--high tide covered most of the sand.
