Congratulations to Steve Hampton for his fascinating and well-documented
account in the American Birding Association magazine Birding Vol 58 No 5
September 2026 titled “The Hantavirus Cruise: Dispatches from the World’s
Most Infamous Birding Trip”.
Steve covers the role of retired oncologist Dr Steve Kornfeld of Bend OR
who took over medical duties when the ship’s doctor was struck down with
the virus. He ended his cruise with a 6-week stay in a Nebraska bio
containment unit. Steve also included the testimony of a Spanish member of
the cruise, also a doctor, who survived this deadly illness.
I am not able to send a link but great articles like this are a good reason
to join the ABA. Thank you Steve.
