Hi Eve, I did send you an almost  non- dog answer, tho not sure you got it since the email  message was kicked backed to me.  The "It's not an owl"  answer may not be definitive, since I read that Barred Owls and young GH Owls can have a very dog-like bark among their repertoire.  And i have been waiting for the first Barred Owl to be discovered in the county!  SueSent from my Galaxy

Morning, birders! The votes are in! And the winner of the El Monte Co. Park Sound Contest, is, by a margin of 8-3, a "large barking dog" (with four voters "undecided").  Only Ter took a stab at identifying the sound to breed, wagering it was "some kind of hound".  Extra credit for Ter!  And I'm changing my undecided vote to "dog" as well :) I have to say, it has been fun hearing from so many of you - thanks for chiming in!  I'll correct the observation comments on my soundscape recording.  And here's the checklist link again for the curious:  https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/checklist/S404796353I will now return you to your regularly scheduled programming!~Eve On 10/28/2026 2:53 PM, Eve Martin via groups.io wrote:Hahaha, OK, a consensus is rolling in via private (very thoughtful of you!) emails.  I won't say quite yet so the rest of you have a chance at a guess or a chuckle at my expense. Thanks, everybody!   ~Eve~~~~~~~~~~~Eve MartinDel Mar, California

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://sandiegofieldornithologists.org/san-diego-county-avian-records-database/.
