Subject: [CT Birds] Vermillion regret
I now feel like an idiot for not reporting. I’ll explain. October 28 I was birding Sherwood Island in the area where the feeders used to be (northwest end of model airplane parking area). I had camera in hand. A small flycatcher shaped bird flew onto the large tree on the right. I put binoculars on it and immediately thought it was a Vermillion (very familiar from trips to Central and South America). I quickly tried to get my camera on it but an extremely agitated Mockingbird flew right into the bird and drove it off, the small bird flying east out over the marsh and out of sight. I only saw this bird for less than five seconds. And of course I thought I must be mistaken. I especially thought I was nuts when I checked historical records, and there are zero accepted Connecticut records of Vermillion Flycatcher. So without documentation, I did not report the bird yesterday (although I did share my experience with a fellow birder). I was floored to see that photos were obtained this morning. I apologize to the Connecticut birding community for not reporting bird yesterday but, seriously, I thought it impossible. Just goes to show anything is possible when you’re out birding.
