Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Red Crossbills and late Bank Swallow
Tuesday midday there are approximately 14 Red Crossbills at Sweetwater Summit Campground next to Sweetwater Reservoir, which is a county park with the usual County Park fees. The campground is full of pine trees with lots of cones. When I just had the birds a short while ago, they were near the south end of the campground bordering the metal horse corrals overlooking Highway 125, but there are plenty of other pines scattered throughout that could host them. I mention this because almost all the coastal crossbills to date have been flybys or only briefly sitting, so if anybody wants photographs without going to the mountains, this might be a reasonable option. One never knows if the birds could pick up and totally leave, but given how much food is here, hopefully they'll stick around. There's also a bunch of siskins and rb nuts present.
Less than an hour earlier, I birded the upper end of Lower Otay Lake where at the very east end a group of about 10 swallows foraging over all the weedy and marshy grass that has grown up at that top end of the reservoir contains one decidedly late Bank Swallow in with the Trees and Barns. On the mudflats there are three Dunlin, 45 White Pelicans, and my total for American Coots in that entire arm of the lake was a hefty 2400.

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://sandiegofieldornithologists.org/san-diego-county-avian-records-database/.
