Beth and I hit the major lakes of NW Litchfield today and were rewarded with some nice birds at several spots. Highlights as follows:
Twin Lakes: 1 Red-necked Grebe on East Twin (Washining). Along S side of Am School for the Deaf Camp island. Viewable from W side of lake on Between the Lakes Road. Two Greater Yellowlegs (getting a little late and our area is not great for shorebirds) barely viewable from state boat launch in NE corner.
Wononskopomuc Lake: 49 Black Scoter, 3 Long-tailed Duck, 3 Greater Scaup, 1 Red-throated Loon. This lake can be empty or interesting. Today it was the latter.
Wononpakook Lake: No really outstanding species, but evidence of building numbers. 130 Ring-necked Duck in far N end. A few Ruddy Ducks and Buffleheads. This lake generally has the highest numbers and diversity in the area, and Ring-necked numbers seem to regularly build to 1000+ over the next month or so.
Mudge Pond: 4 Black Scoter, 2 Lesser Scaup, 3 Green-winged Teal. First time we have seen Black Scoter here.
