Dennis,

Tweeters readers should know that that blog post contains several outright
lies and conspiracy theories, both relying on the racist trope of lying,
cheating Indians.

1) It hypothesizes that the Tribe has a secret ulterior business motive for
taking over the refuges, implying the Tribe is deliberately deceiving us
when they tell us there will be no commercial activities and that they will
be subject to the same public access and environmental protection
obligations as the USFWS currently is. The post basically attributes to the
Tribe the same characteristics of the worst settler colonists: privatizing
land and exploiting it, the actions that created the Great American Ecocide
of the last few centuries. This is both ironic and offensive because the
tribes were, in fact, treated like wildlife and were victims of that
ecocide; they now work hard to reverse it.

2) The blog claims the Tribes will not be subject to federal laws on
reservation land. Nothing is further from the truth. Tribes - on their
reservations - are subject to the National Env Protection Act (NEPA), the
Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the
Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and many others, not to mention all major crimes
(see Major Crimes Act). The author of this blog is well aware that the
Makah fought for decades - doing two EIS's and one EA - just for the right
to apply for a permit to kill one whale, which was explicitly granted them
in their treaty. In the meantime, oil companies put in offshore platforms
like the Deepwater Horizon with a 30-day negative declaration, the kind of
permit you might get for a park bench. Asserting that the Tribe will be
exempt from laws is waving the wild Indians flag.

This racist drivel has no place on Tweeters, though it all too often finds
a home here. Would that we spend our time fighting real threats to our
lands and waters, instead of spreading lies about those with a proven track
record protecting and restoring it.
