Subject: [AZNMbirds] American Golden Plover
Hello Birders!
I photographed an American Golden-plover in pond 2 at the Gilbert Riparian Preserve today, 10/27.
I’ve discounted black-bellied plover because this bird‘s beak is so petite compared to black-bellied plover. Small-headed, long-necked look are golden-plover features as well.
This bird’s primary wing tips are the same length as the tail.
Facial features include a well defined superciliary which contrasts with a darker smudgy auricular which becomes even darker at the rear of the auricular. I’m using these characteristics to differentiate this bird from Pacific golden-plover.
Bird flew up with a mixed flock of shore birds and I haven’t seen it since the initial sighting.

Photos posted to eBird.
