California birders,
With the recent elevation of Eurasian Whimbrel to species status by the AOS<https://americanornithology.org/split-decisions-with-a-first-for-guatemala-67th-supplement-checklist-of-north-american-birds-publishes/>, the CBRC will be reviewing records of this species in California. While there are about 10 known records from the state, the CBRC will initially be reviewing two records—one of up to two individuals in Del Norte County in June-July 2026 and the other in San Francisco and San Mateo counties in September 2019—in order to add the species to the state list sooner rather than later. The committee would appreciate prompt submissions of documentation you might have for any of these birds: https://www.californiabirds.org/report_sighting.html. The committee also welcomes documentation for any other Eurasian Whimbrels reported from California, though those reports will not be reviewed until next year.
Thank you,
Tom
