As November is almost upon us, the topic of wintering rarities will start cropping up more and more. The returning Painted Whitestart [Redstart] in residential Point Loma is one good example. With the appearance of such rarities that will likely now be in residence for multiple months, coupled with the ever-increasing overall numbers of birders and photographers, there are the recurring issues of repeated harassment and over-staying our welcome in residential areas and at other "sensitive" sites. So..... PLEASE refrain from playing recordings at winter stakeouts, given the potential for repeated, months-long abuse, and PLEASE be considerate of folks living in homes bordering where such birds frequent, and try to keep noise levels down, park in appropriate places, and try not to point large camera lenses in the direction of people's homes or where there are children. The problem is usually not just a few folks visiting, rather it is the repeated visits by a substantial number of birders and photographers over an extended period of time. If in doubt about widely advertising a new rarity at a site with potential disturbance issues, often best to err on the side of caution. Some neighborhoods and other sites are more tolerant of such repeated disturbance than are others.
