Hello – On Tuesday evening I’m helping to host a lecture in the NYSM's Huxley Theater at 6:00 by historian Kristoffer Whitney, visiting from Rochester Institute of Technology. Doctor Whitney will be talking about his research on the ornithologist Wallace Craig, who published a monograph, NYSM Bulletin No. 334, on the song of the Eastern Wood Peewee in 1943. Craig slowly lost his hearing while working on this research, and developed a network of volunteers to send him their observations on Peewee songs using his method of musical notation. Craig’s subtitle, “A Study of Bird Music”, hints at his philosophy that bird song is an esthetic artform. It’s an interesting story, and an early version of the citizen science that drives so much of ornithology today. Kristoffer’s visit is co-sponsored by the U-Albany Department of History and the RPI Department of Science and Technology Studies.
