Subject: [NHBirds] November County Challenge!
Greetings all,

Guess what?! It's almost November, which means it's time for NH birders to
reinvigorate themselves in this "dead zone" between peak migration and the
CBCs. For the last nine years, we have fanned out across the state's ten
counties in a friendly competition to see which county comes out on top.
For newbies, the scoring here is complicated and possibly flawed, but we
try to use some sort of percentage system so not give bird-rich counties an
overwhelming advantage. The result has traditionally been the opposite:
counties with
lower historic species totals tend you win. Dan Mullarky has offered to
help try to find a middle ground for 2026, so stay tuned.

But no matter how it's scored, the rules remain unchanged.
1) Go birding in a county of counties of your choice (some of us have
fierce loyalties in November these days!) - starting on November 1
2) Report your birds on eBird. Birds not in eBird are not registered and
thus don't count towards county totals.
3) periodically we'll be looking at county-level totals and providing
status updates as the month progresses.
4) Provide idle banter and/or team encouragement as the contest heats up.
5) Have fun

The gates open next Sunday at 12:01 am. Will you be ready?
