Hi all,
Jonathan Nakai and I spent the day birding around the hills of the Palos Verdes peninsula today, checking to see if any montane birds made it to the peninsula. The highlight was several Red Crossbills inside the gated community of Rolling Hills. Red Crossbills have been found in several places away from the mountains this weekend, but I thought I'd mention this record -- if eBird is to be believed, the previous time Crossbills were found on the hill at Palos Verdes was well before Jonathan and I were born.
Other somewhat uncommon birds on the hill today were: - Band-tailed Pigeon (Rolling Hills) - Mountain Chickadee (Rolling Hills) - Pine Siskins (multiple places) - Large numbers of Red-breasted Nuthatches (~25), Northern Flickers (~25), Purple Finches (~20)
These are all seen semi-regularly in the fall and winter, but to see them all in one day was pretty neat. I also thought we had a Cassin's Finch flyover at one point, but I'm not confident because Purple Finches started calling immediately afterwards.
The crossbills were not in a publicly accessible location, but I'd encourage checking areas with pine trees anywhere. They seem to be really widespread right now.
