I stopped along Hellyer Ave. as I have for twelve years to check on the resident Say's Phoebe pair that has nested in an out house. The first bird I saw was a Say's Phoebe on the roof. About a dozen Lark Sparrow were nearby on the ground or fence.
I was anxious to get to Hellyer Park after seeing SCVBA's photos of the River Otter in Cottonwood Lake. It was difficult to concentrate with all the birds! There must have been a hundred Yellow-rumped Warblers in the immediate vicinity. I was thrilled to find the otter by following its long wake. Birds of interest here were Northern Flickers, White-tailed Kite, 2 Red breasted Sapsuckers, Hermit Thrush, Western Bluebirds, a Say's Phoebe and a Ruby crowned Kinglet flashing its red crown.
My backyard is very birdy after hanging a feeder with sunflower chips yesterday. Pine Siskins, Am. Goldfinch, Oak Titmice, Chickadees, White and Red breasted Nuthatch, Pygmy Nuthatch and a Western Tanager mobbed the feeder today. I've also had quite a few Yellow-rumped Warblers and Western Bluebirds in the yard the last few weeks. A Hermit Thrush is getting braver each day and shows itself often now. Other birds at the suet feeder are Nuttall's Woodpecker, Bewicks Wren, Golden crowned Sparrow, Juncos and Cal. Scrub Jays.
