Tweets - A fabulous day at Marymoor today. A touch chilly and a touch foggy to start, but we had full sunshine within by about 8:45 a.m. A really beautiful fall day, and pretty birdy. We did not find either the Northern Shrike nor the Bohemian Waxwing that I found on Tuesday afternoon, but we had plenty to make up for that.
Highlights: Wilson's Snipe - At least 5 and maybe several more below the weir Cooper's Hawk - MANY sightings of juveniles; at least 3 birds, and all were severely mobbed by American Crows Red-tailed Haw - One east of the mansion, also mobbed by American Crows NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL - Found being mobbed by a huge crowd of tiny birds, DEEP in the grove SW of the windmill. First of Year (FOY) Four woodpecker day - All the expected ones except sapsucker, all seen American Kestrel - One over the grass soccer fields, driven off by American Crows Varied Thrush - Very sharp-looking male on the ground south of Clise Mansion just after we started. Another heard later American Pipit - Maybe six or more, on the grass and gravel lot SE of the Climbing Rock White-throated Sparrow - 1-2 seen just north of the heronry Western Meadowlark - My count was 13, including at least 1 singing. Near the American Pipits, Killdeer, and European Starlings on the grass/gravel lot
A late scan of the lake turned up two HORNED GREBE, and our First of Fall WESTERN GREBE (FOF).
Misses today included Hooded Merganser, Virginia Rail, Short-billed Gull, California Gull, Northern Shrike, Bushtit, and Purple Finch.
For the day, 58 species. Adding the NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, we're at 125 species for the survey in 2026
