'Twas a chill and fog-bound morning as we gathered for today's Thursday Birding Meetup at the Cayuga Nature Center Upper Loop trails. A spooky dense fog settled in just as we started to head down the Black Diamond Trail and continued as we explored the Upper Loop trails in search of birds. Amazingly, the twelve of us succeeded in seeing 25 species along the way! A mockingbird, Cooper's hawk and red-tailed hawk caught our attention immediately. Through the mist, we were able to see 20 white-throated sparrows along with one each of white-crowned, song and swamp sparrows. A ruby-crowned kinglet popped up. Otherwise, our viewing could be considered a variety pack of one towhee here, one yellow rump there, two bluebirds over there, goldfinches on the goldenrod and a smattering of woodpeckers and our expected local birds. Some Canada geese and red-wings in the sky rounded out our sightings. Of course, kids of all ages love the Tree House so we made sure to pay a visit, climbing to the top and enjoying the views as the fog lifted and the sun finally came out to greet us. A low-key lovely birding morning with the warmth of fellow birders, and eventually, the sun. We breakfasted at The Falls in Trumansburg to continue telling tales of birding long ago and yet to come.
