It's that time of the year, when the powers that be cause chaos in the birders' world by splitting, lumping, and renaming bird species. We have three changes to the South Dakota list.
Marsh Wren has been split into two species: Eastern Marsh-Wren and Western Marsh-Wren. Both breed in South Dakota, with Eastern occurring in the eastern two-thirds of the state and Western occurring in the western third of the state (including Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge).
The other two changes are name changes. Willet has been split into two species; ours is the Prairie Willet. And Great Egret has been split, with ours now being called the American Egret.
