On Tuesday, October 27 from 3-4 pm the Somerville Arts Council is having a ribbon-cutting ceremony in front of the new Mystic Eagle Mural Panels on Mystic Avenue. The ceremony, which includes the mayor of Somerville, is to honor the Somerville students and naturalists that created this spectacular eagle mural, and to celebrate the amazing Mystic Mural program under noted muralist David Fichter supported by the Arts Council. For over thirty years, Somerville High School students have researched, designed, and painted huge murals along Mystic Avenue depicting various natural subjects/scenes in the Mystic River Valley. The spectacular larger-than-life murals include MK & KZ in earlier days, and the famous Red-tailed Hawks Buzz and Ruby and their kids at 185 Alewife Brook Parkway. This year they honored MK, a victim of rodenticide poisoning three years ago, and draw attention to the fight for restrictions on rodenticide. If you haven't seen the murals before, perhaps it's time you should. The colorful panels are roughly 44' by 11'. There are approximately 30 panels covering roughly 1000 feet on the large Route 93 retaining wall along Mystic Avenue, They begin at about 500 Mystic Ave. near the intersection with Shore Drive and the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse (There is a public parking lot at 32 Shore Drive and Mystic River). Some of the panels are best seen from across Mystic Street over/behind traffic. (Because of traffic viewing of some panels is best on Sunday or holiday mornings.) You may well need more than one visit to fully appreciate this incredible public art by local students Julie and I are amazed every time we visit, and we usually see something special that we didn't notice before. Personally, I'd encourage people who enjoy the murals to drop a note to the Somerville Arts Council at https://www.flickr.com/groups/somervilleartscouncil/ or 2026 Somerville Arts Council | 50 Evergreen Avenue | Somerville, MA 02145 to thank them for supporting this "free" arts program for over three decades and the hundreds of talented young artists who conceived and painted the murals.
