Back in 1972, my first introduction to eastern N Amer. birds was helping the Illinois Natural History Survey sort through boxes of birds killed in one night at one tower in central Illinois. Although not an inspiring job, I learned to separate species in fall such as blackpoll from bay-breasted warbler. There was even one yellow rail among the victims.

1000 dead or injured birds were collected last night near Evanston, Illinois.
