While headed out for a morning walk and just a few feet from the front door a vocalizing pileated woodpecker flew across my pathway. About 5 feet behind it was a sharp shinned hawk in fast pursuit. For the next 15 minutes I observed the pileated move from tree to tree as chips rained down from its excavations. Every so often the hawk took a dive at the woodpecker with seemingly little concern evident in the woodpecker's behavior despite the repeated dive bys. I came to the conclusion that because it was an immature sharpy, it was still learning the rules of the road. It was a good start to the walk that would include seeing one pintail duck, a blue headed vireo and one Carolina wren among other species. Derby
