Tweeters,
On a mostly cloudy, cool day (46-56degF), 18 of us hiked around the JBLM Eagle's Pride GC, finding some Fall favorites as well as the usual suspects in this mostly forested area. Some of what we tallied:
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH - 60 - located all along the route.
RED CROSSBILL - 117 - also located everywhere along the route.
VARIED THRUSH - 14 - nice first of season visitors.
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW - 4 - a low number, but nice to see.
FOX SPARROW - 1 - first of the season.
AMERICAN WIGEON - 3 - likely more to come as the season progresses.
RING-NECKED DUCK - 17 - all on Hodge Lake.
BELTED KINGFISHER - 1 - the first of the year; possibly a youngster wandering around looking for some place to fish.
Missing: Raptors of any kind.
Mammals: Black-tailed deer (2); Douglas Squirrel (many); Townsend's chipmunk (1); Coyote (young one that we saw from start to finish of the walk).
The JBLM Eagle's Pride GC birders meet the third Thursday of each month at 9:00AM from November-February and 8:00AM March-October. The starting point is the Driving Range building, Eagle's Pride Golf Course, I-5 Exit 116, Mounts Road Exit. (Turn left immediately after entering the parking lot to take the road leading to the driving range building.)
Upcoming walks include the following:
* November 19 (9am start)
* December 17 (9am start)
* January 21 (9am start)
Everyone is welcome!
