Manhattan, N.Y. City - Friday, October 16th -

A Sora and a Yellow-breasted Chat were each continuing on Friday, both photographed and with many observers thru the day, at Bryant Park in mid-Manhattan. Other migrant birds and likely winterers were also seen.

At Central Park, at least 2 Red-headed Woodpeckers were still around the area south of the reservoir and approximately north of the 72 Street latitude of the park, with a possibility that more than 2 individuals are in that sector of the park. One is In adult or bright plumage, and at least one - or more - are in first-fall plumage with just traces of red, or almost no red on head. Learning the calls of this species is helpful in locating, the more so if these are still setting up potential territories, which in some years in this park and elsewhere in Manhattan in past winters, have been almost-colonial, with varying degrees of non-breeding territoriality.

Also in Central Park, American Wigeon and at least 5 Green-winged Teal were ongoing, as were Wood and Ruddy Ducks, N. Shovelers, and other typical waterfowl of the season. More waterfowl arrivals are imminent around the county and in Manhattan.

Good birding,
