East winds brought good mountain bird potential to Point Loma the last few days. I spent a short time this morning and yesterday morning primarily standing along the main road (Catalina Blvd.) looking for flybys and such. No need to even enter the cemetery for good viewpoints.
Yesterday 10/15, at the south end of the cemetery I heard a Blackbird call, and I saw what looked like a Brewer's-shaped Blackbird coming over. I snapped a few photos as it was going over, and I’m just now today looking at my photos and realizing it was in fact a Rusty Blackbird!
Yesterday I had a very vocal type 1 Evening Grosbeak that spent some time along Catalina Blvd. at the south end of the cemetery before it headed around to other areas. Today there was a type 2 Red Crossbill that did the same thing.
Yesterday I also had a Cassin’s Finch fly out from along Catalina Blvd. at the north end of the cemetery.
As Paul mentioned, a couple birders had a Clark’s Nutcracker today perched on one of the gravestones in the northeast. Others had at least 5 Nutcrackers fly by the cemetery on Wednesday.
East winds projected to continue into tomorrow but dying down.
