Tweets - We were beset with more fog, but less cold, than the forecasts last night. The fog stayed mostly above us, but we weren't out of the gloom until the final few minutes this morning. Things were VERY quiet.
Highlights: Ring-billed Gull - One with flock of mostly-Glaucous-winged Gulls and maybe 3 Californias. First of Fall (FOF) Sharp-shinned Hawk - Adult just south of Dog Area in the Big Cottonwood Forest Cooper's Hawk - Small juvenile at the Viewing Mound, and earlier a glimpse of a presumed Coop being surrounded by 20+ crows at the Pea Patch Downy Woodpecker - One male at the Rowing Club dock was our only woodpecker besides Flicker Merlin - I had one just before the start of the survey, near the Velodrome. We also had a possible Peregrine over the boardwalk Varied Thrush - Pale female along south edge of Dog Meadow (FOF) White-throated Sparrow - Near 2nd Dog Swim Beach Western Meadowlark - Three with ~30 Killdeer on the grass/gravel parking area SE of the Climbing Wall
Misses today included Hooded Merganser, Western Grebe, Red-tailed Hawk, Steller's Jay, Chestnut-backed Chickadee (probably heard, but...), Bushtit, Savannah Sparrow, and Lincoln's Sparrow. Many of the birds we did get were in small numbers. Our only mammal was Eastern Gray Squirrel. QUIET.
For the day, 52 species.
