Hi Birders,
It really felt like fall this morning as 9 birders walked the trails around
the San Pedro House. We managed to find 53 species as activity along Del
Valle Road and Garden Wash was high. Highlights included a few interesting
flyovers as we found a nice kettle of southbound Turkey Vultures, a
circling Great Egret, a soaring Gray Hawk amongst numerous unidentifiable
swallows, and most surprisingly a fly by Osprey. Sparrows and towhees are
starting to arrive as we had a four towhee day (Green-tailed, Abert's,
Canyon, and Spotted) along with the typical sparrow species. We did manage
a few warblers as well, with Orange-crowned, MacGillivray's, Nashville,
Black-throated Gray, and Yellow-rumped all showing up.
The Friends of the San Pedro River leads birding walks every 2nd and 4th
Wednesday of the month. For the next several months the walks start at
7:00a. The walks leave from the BLM’s San Pedro House south of State Route
90 just west of the San Pedro River. We walk about 4km and are out for
about three hours. Bring your own binoculars, a hat and water.
The next San Pedro River birding walk is on Wednesday, October 28 at 7:00a.
