Following up on Naomi's post about the annual duck hunting season in VFNHP, just mentioning for awareness that there is a new deer management program in Saratoga Spa State Park. The program allows deer hunting with bows only (no firearms) beginning today and running through 1 January 2027. Hunting is restricted to the undeveloped park lands south of East-West Road that extend all the way south to Northline Rd in Malta, and OPRHP is issuing a total of 15 permits for this initial season. No hunting is allowed within 250' of roads, trails, structures, etc. and the trails from the Carlsbad parking area have an additional buffer zone. Main access to the hunting area would be either Carlsbad parking or the Gray's Crossing parking in Malta. Full details here:
I happened to go there this morning to bird the Carlsbad "picnic table graveyard" trails and a bow hunter was leaving on bicycle as I was getting out of the car. Later I talked to a couple of Parks rangers who filled me in on some of the details. They said there was supposed to be signage posted in the Park, but I haven't noticed any along East-West Road.
