New York County -in N.Y. City- including Manhattan, Governors, Randalls, and Roosevelt Islands and the adjacent waters and skies -
Monday, October 12 -
A Sora was ongoing at Bryant Park in midtown Manhattan, again seen and photographed Monday, Oct. 12th.
A Clay-colored Sparrow, the most recent of multiples in this county this season, was found Monday at Carl Schurz Park on Manhattans Upper East Side, that park on the verge of Manhattan and the East River estuary. There were multiple observers and photos of this sparrow. Note that at any time of day here, one might find dogs being let loose on lawns such as where this sparrow was often seen, flushing up birds from the ground. In this and other such instances, the birds may eventually come back to the same lawn areas. Also around this modestly-sized park were Chipping, Lincolns, and other typical sparrows of the season, and still a number of warblers.
Eastern Meadowlarks showed up at both Governors Island and Randalls Island, each site also having many other migrants and fall-visitant species.
A minimum of 3 Marsh Wrens were noted from the county on Monday, two or possibly three at Central Park, with sightings again by The Pond in that parks southeast corner, and an ongoing individual for 6 straight days in one piece of the Ramble. There also were sightings again at Governors Island, where the species had been noted for several recent days or longer.
The long lingering American Wigeon at Central Park appears to be molting into a male plumage, rather more visibly in the current week. 5 Green-winged Teal also continued at Central Park, lingering an even longer time. Multiple Wood Ducks, Ruddy Ducks, and plenty of N. Shovelers also continue at Central Park. At least 16 species of warblers were still in Central Park on Monday.
Also still being found at Central Park and elsewhere in the county, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Swainsons Thrushes and Wood Thrushes along with the increasing numbers of Hermit Thrushes. Many sparrow species also continued at Central Park, with up to 8 species there Monday including the sparrow known as Dark-eyed Junco. All 8 of those sparrow species were also seen in various locations across the county.
Laughing Gulls continued in the high multiples in this county, some of the double-digit numbers seen at Central Parks reservoir, with far more in some other locations.
Thanks to many observers and photographers for sightings, alerts, and reports as well as tips from while in the field.
