Second Big Sit! Millbrook Marsh.- By the State College Bird Club and Millbrook Marsh.
Weather notes: A chilly and sunny early morning, turning warmer by 11, later becoming partially cloudy in the afternoon.
The team captain started at sunrise, and people joined starting at 7:27. Some new birders were there, and brought in curiosity and a great attitude. For many people, it was their fist Big Sit! and we are so honored that they chose to join us!
We had a nice variety of birds, and more than last year's Big Sit! 46, compared to 35, and I wonder if this difference was due to the tailgating celebrations being quieter this year and a no planes with ads flying low over us for hours. This year Hairy Woodpecker and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker decided to show up. Also, this year, the GBHE collaborated and showed up within the circle. Lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers, and huge flocks of Cedar Waxwings and Red-winged Blackbirds. Two Bald Eagles (one adult, one juvenile) flew very close to us at two moments, giving us great sights.
Susan and Ron brought us food. We enjoyed doughnut holes, apple cider (delicious!), brownies, and honey crisp apples. What a treat! They took over leading the circle and found the American Kestrel that last year teased us from outside the circle, and two Cooper Hawks. Later Joe found a Rusty Blackbird to reach our 46th species.
The birding was fun, the company great, and we together put 28:05 hours combined. Many thanks to all who joined, and we hope to see you there next year!
Many thanks to the Millbrook Marsh for hosting us!
