I have just learned that Tom Southerland of Princeton NJ passed away on Oct. 5, 2026. He had been in hospice since the summer. Tom and his wife Margot were both DVOC members, and together they operated Princeton Nature Tours to destinations including Africa, Antarctica and South America since the early 1980s. He had served as a board member for NJ Audubon in the 1980s. Among many birding activities and publications, he taught a beginning birding class at Princeton Adult School for decades. He loved teaching people about birds and seeing their interest blossom into a lifetime of enjoyment. He was a mentor and friend to me, and he will be deeply missed.
When I have a full obituary I will share it.
Tom is survived by his wife Margot, two daughters and their families. There will be a memorial service on November 24 at 4 PM in the Trinity Church in Princeton, NJ.
