This morning (10/10) I was joined by 27 birders who braved the cold winds for a fun loop around the hill.
Some highlights:
Canada Goose - lone fly over, only the 2nd time seen over the hill in 2026
Anna's Hummingbird - JR Blair spotted a female collecting Coyotebrush fluff, nesting season has begun
Merlin - we watched this bird for over 20 minutes at distance perched on top of Buena Vista Park. It dropped down after harassment from a Steller's Jay and within 30 seconds swooped over the group on Corona Hill for a brief up close view
Violet-green Swallows - a flock of ~25 migrated over head as we were wrapping up
EVENING GROSBEAK - irruption continues, a lone female flew by at eye level as the group was assembling in the museum parking lot calling once
RED CROSSBILLS (Type 2/Ponderosa) - another species irrupting on the coast. A flock of ~12 briefly landed a pine over the museum garden, several more flew over calling during the course of the morning.
The next Corona Hills walk is tentatively scheduled for 11/17. I will post to the list if this changes.
Other sightings of note from Corona Hill the past week:
BROAD-WINGED HAWK - HY flew over the museum mid-morning 10/7
