Weather: Blue skies to start with a layer of thin clouds moving in from the south (outer bands of the clouds from Hurricane Isaias as it makes landfall along the Florida panhandle). Becoming nearly overcast by the end of the day as the cloud layer thickened. Light to moderate westerly winds shifting WNW in the afternoon. Warm and pleasant day with a high around 73F.
Raptor Observations: An excellent steady flight. Some migrants were low and the cloud cover helped with spotting the others.
Vulture migration was moderate with 49 Turkey Vultures and a group of 12 Black Vultures. Good large raptor activity with 15 Bald Eagles (including up to five soaring together) and three Ospreys. Moderate numbers of harriers (4) and Accips (20 sharpies, 10 Coops). A couple red-tails and red-shoulders. We had the falcon trifecta again including 15 kestrels and 2 peregrines that came through a few minutes apart in the morning.
New species for season: Common Loon, Northern Rough-winged Swallow.
Predictions: TOMORROW: Partly to mostly cloudy. High 72F. Winds NE shifting E at 5-10mph. Winds are more favorable in the morning. Expect light to moderate migration.
SUNDAY: A steady rain early. Showers with thunder in the afternoon. High near 65F. Winds E at 10-20mph. Chance of rain 100%. Rainfall may reach one inch. Count will likely be canceled.
MONDAY: Morning showers then partly cloudy. High 71F. Winds NNW at 10-15mph. Good winds after the rain. Could be a decent day if the current timing holds. ======================================================================== Report submitted by David Brown (<davidebrownpa...>) Ashland Nature Center information may be found at: www.delnature.org
