Subject: [MDBirding] Oct. 6 flight, Ferry Neck.

Rigby’s Folly, Ferry Neck,
Talbot County, MD

substantial flight as recorded by George Armistead, 67 species. Flight was headed North, reorientation direction in the early morning:

wild turkey 14
bald eagle 3
yellow-bellied sapsucker 7 (cf. 20 on Oct. 13, 1991)
red-bellied woodpecker 26** (previous highs of 8, Oct. 10, 1981 & Oct. 18,
1990)
northern flicker 44
peregrine flacon 1
eastern phoebe 16
blue jay 1,480 (previous high: 1,025, Oct. 1, 1972) ***
brown-headed nuthatch 2
brown thrasher 5
marsh wren 1* (5th property record)
white-crowned sparrow 1*
Lincoln’s sparrow 2*
swamp sparrow 34
warblers (9 species)

*= also seen Oct. 7

RBWoodpecker, long-held to be a sedentary, non-migratory species, but big counts were done a few years ago, for the 1st time, in MD & Philadelphia.

blue jay: incl. a single flock of 140.
