- Comments: "This bird had been found the previous afternoon at Goleta Beach, about two miles to the east, and was rebound earlier in the day near Coal Oil Point, where Curtis Marantz and I watched it at length. I can't add much to these photos in terms of plumage details. Things that were noticeable in the field were that the bird had shorter legs and was overall shorter than adjacent Marbled Godwits; the belly, vent, and under tail coverts were essentially white; the wing coverts had dark centers but were had broad, bold, and whitish edges; the tertials were broadly dark (brown) in the center with pale marks around the outside (as opposed to having complete bars across the feathers); the tail appeared barred white and blackish; the face had an obvious and broad white supercilium; the primary tips were black, with some showing some fine pale edges; and a pale crescent was at the base of the primaries; and wing linings were white with some gray barring. Curtis and I were pretty close to the flocks, which was essentially a bunch of Marbleds with the one Bar-tailed Godwit, and maybe the occasional Willet or Long-billed Curlew as the fringes of the group. Lighting conditions were excellent."

Distinct in its smaller size as compared to the MAGO with which it was associating as well as its overall paler/lighter whitish hue (not cinnamon) and dark eyeline and white supercillium. Scaly brown/white back. Barred tail (visible in some of the photos). The last photo included in this checklist (taken through my scope) is meant to show the size/color difference as compared to MAGO."

Bar-tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Oct 08, 2026 11:22 by Armando Aispuro
- Coal Oil Point, Devereux Beach, Sands Beach, and bluff trails, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-119.8783064&<ll...>,-119.8783064

- Media: 6 Photos
- Comments: "Originally found by Benjamin Byerly the evening of 10/7 on the beach east of Campus Point and re-found today at Coal Oil Point Reserve, just east of the point. It had an overall pale appearance to it, most obvious was the white supercilium and cheek with a smudgy brown line going through the eye, and a capped look to the crown giving the head a strongly contrasting appearance. The bill was long and slightly upturned, pink with black tip. The neck was also very pale with no buffy wash but rather occasional gray-brown scales. The back appeared striated (rather than speckled as in Marbled Godwits). The primary and secondary coverts had extensive white edging with small brown centers, further giving the bird a pale look. The tail had an alternating black and white 'barring' pattern blending into a rump with bright white feathers intermixed with chocolatey brown feathers, finally blending into the striated upper back pattern. The legs were comparatively slightly shorter, and the entire bird was slightly smaller than the Marbled Godwits with which it was congregating. Behaviorally, it seemed to favor the dry sand for foraging, and on a few occasions I saw it bullying other godwits for foraging space."
