Hi,
When we went to Veracruz, Mx. the TUVUs migrated with the same
method/strategy as
the rest of the birds ... they started "getting up" about 10 (when the
thermals started),
circled in a thermal along with other species in the same thermal until
they reached the max
altitude (each species kind of went to a different height), then they
would peel off and
glide to the next thermal South, and start kettling up again. We never
saw them leave
the migration for that day (probably happened later/when we were at
dinner?). In
fact all of the species were doing the same. We did see migrating birds
that weren't
actively migrating - in fields, trees, inlets, on power towers, etc. -
and all of the
species seemed to go to some favorite roost (a tree, a power tower,
etc.) for the
night.
The migration was more of a 'stream' than a 'flock' - in fact,
Veracruz is known as
"The River of Raptors". Most of the time the birds were quite high -
too far to do
any kind of photography other than the entire kettle(s). You could look
out over
the land and see the next kettle (in just about any direction).
