Tweets - we were beset with fog for most of the morning today, although
pre-dawn and for the first little bit we were below most of the gray. It
wasn't until after the Viewing Mound that the day cleared, eventually
becoming a stunningly beautiful fall day full of color. Birds were making
a large number of a variety of calls, so we were very aware of their
invisible presence. Sightings were more difficult.

Highlights:
Hutton's Vireo - One heard near the windmill again. More than 10% of
the ~50 detections of this species over the years have been in 2026
American Pipit - At least 3 along with 5+ WESTERN MEADOWLARK and 20+
KILLDEER on the grass/gravel area south of the Climbing Wall
Pine Siskin - Tight flock of 40-60 flying roughly down the slough.
These are our First Of Year (FOY) though we've *thought* we've heard single
birds previously
White-throated Sparrow - One east of the east end of the boardwalk.
First of Fall (FOF), and the first time we can remember one anywhere near
that corner

A late scan of the lake, once the fog had cleared, turned up three HORNED
GREBE (FOF) and a NORTHERN HARRIER (FOY) that was working the lake edge.

We had no confirmed PINE SISKINS for 18 months before today.

Matt and Eric had a MULE DEER on top of the Viewing Mound pre-dawn. I had
a BOBCAT (FOY) near the river bridge on my way out!

Misses today included Cackling Goose, Hooded Merganser, American Coot,
Ring-billed and California Gulls, Western Grebe, Cooper's Hawk, American
Barn Owl, and Savannah Sparrow.

For the year, adding NORTHERN HARRIER and PINE SISKIN, I believe we're up
to 124 species for the 2026 survey. For the day, 52 species of birds.
