Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Hotspots for eBird bar charts October 8 - 14
Greetings,

In this first week of October, we finished bar charts for 5 hotspots!

At one of those, Delta Beach--south overlook, John Bruin captured a
stunning photo of an American Barn Owl in dawn lighting!

Meanwhile, I decided to hike all the way to the top of Cuyamaca Peak. A
first for me, having previously gotten close but turning back shortly
before the actual peak - it's a difficult hike due to the ~1500ft elevation
change. I'm glad I managed to finish the hike this time, as, right near the
top, I encountered about ten Clark's Nutcrackers, and also a potential
Plumbeous Vireo (left as a slash). A bit before that, I watched a Merlin
tenaciously mobbing a Common Raven in flight for several minutes! Fox
Sparrows continue to be reliable along Lookout Rd near the campgrounds, and
I noted one near the peak as well. This also marks the first time I've
encountered more than one Hammond's Flycatcher in the same place, and what
is (for me, at least) a remarkably high number of Ruby-crowned Kinglets
(26), with a cluster of ~10 in one place and several other smaller
clusters. The region near the peak was particularly active in general and
is where I recorded most of the warblers on my list.

In the next bar chart week, starting Thursday, we have an opportunity to
finish two more (noted at the top of the list below).

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://sandiegofieldornithologists.org/san-diego-county-avian-records-database/.
