The prescribed burns at Piute Ponds last week resulted in some burned patches in the south pond complex and the se. corner of Big Piute, plus some burned reeds south of Ave C at nw. Big Piute. But overall there was little obvious habitat change.
This morning I saw two juvenile Sabine's Gulls flying west from the Duckbill pond area -- it looked like they might be heading for the Lancaster sewage ponds, but they turned south (and were not seen again). Landbirds of interest included a continuing American Redstart (found by Sona Conlin on 3 Oct), and a Varied Thrush at the NE corner of Big Piute. Lots of ducks, relatively few shorebirds, and a nice view of a White-tailed Kite pulling entrails out of a small mouse it had caught.
