Along with juncos, solitaires are my favorite harbinger of the coming
winter -- and they are definitely back in Denver City Park.
Monday evening two pairs of them were doing something I'd never witnessed
before:
Madly chasing each other in and out of and around the tight confines of the
park's "pinetum" conifer grove, below the south wall of the Denver Museum
of Nature & Science.
And they were singing -- not calling yet -- all the while.
At one point I stood still as they repeatedly whooshed past at eye/head
level, oblivious of me.
Occasionally one or another would alight on an evergreen branch for a few
seconds, still warbling, then resuming the circular chase. This went on
for a good 15 minutes, maybe more.
The pinetum has a number of berry-filled junipers that will tide over one
of these very territorial birds through the coming winter. It's a favorite
stop on birding rounds of the park to catch that soft yet penetrating
whistle:
*heep . . . heep . . . heep . . .*
