Rick Fisher and I took the Catalina Express from Long Beach to Avalon, this
morning Sunday 10/4/2026. We wanted to take the boat out of San Pedro—to go
past the red buoy and the green buoy where boobies (starting with a Nazca
Booby)—but San Pedro boat tickets were all sold out on Thursday.
We arrived in Avalon around 0930, and spent the day slowly ascending Avalon
Canyon Road, arriving at the Wrigley Memorial around 1230 PM. Along the
way, we saw bazillions of Red breasted Nuthatches—who were in every type of
tree or bush you could imagine—not limiting themselves to pines
(most—perhaps all—non native pines). It was hot. We sweated a lot. We drank
a lot of water. It was exhausting and not birdy at all, until Rick found a
weird Empidonax:

hour of sunlight:

multiple cool birds.
