Subject: Dickcissel continues; some other LA county notes Re: [LACoBirds] Dickcissel, Black-and-white Warbler at Sorensen Park, Lake L. A.
Hi all,

Mark and Janet Scheel and I chased the Dickcissel was in the same place
that Kimball describes below. Shortly before refinding the Dickcissel,
Janet also found an incredible White-headed Woodpecker in the same area.
Strange place for one.

To make amends for chasing a bird this far, and because it is 10 degrees
cooler here in the desert than in Pasadena, I stopped at Everett Martin
Park on the way back. This park has been dead on my previous visits this
fall, but sparrows have arrived now, and I found a Clay-colored Sparrow
with a couple of Chipping Sparrows along the south fence. Clay-colored
Sparrows are harder to find in the desert than on the coastal slope.

In montane irruption news, I spent the day yesterday driving the (sometimes
very rough) road along the Liebre-Sawmill ridge in the western Angeles
National Forest, and visiting some spots off this road. I had the "usual"
suspects for this year: lots of Clark's Nutcrackers, lots of Red-breasted
Nuthatches, and singles of Pinyon Jay, Pine Siskin and Cassin's Finch.
Other migrants included my FOF Lewis's Woodpecker and several Sharp-shinned
Hawks. Trip report here: https://ebird.org/tripreport/578717

Stay cool!

Naresh
