Subject: [slocobirding] Baltimore Oriole - Morro Bay yard , late report
Hello Birders!

Another doozie appeared in our yard on Friday, October 2. #164. A hatch year female Baltimore Oriole made a visit to our yard. While common in eastern USA it is considered very rare with limited records in the west.

My first impression of this bird when I saw it moving in the brush was of a medium sized, orange bird. Bill was medium sized, no apparent eye line or supercilium, two distinct wing bars showing no saw-tooth markings on upper bar, orange-yellowish underparts and orange rump. These were a few of the most convincing field marks that proved helpful in identifying this species and to help eliminate the similar female Bullock's and Hooded orioles.

Because of the notorious difficulty of separating this species from the common Hooded and Bullock’s orioles I circulated my photos to a few well know experts in the slo birding community, seeking confirmation of my id before posting.

Photo for id purposes now up on flickr. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kaarenp/
