Subject: [ia-bird] Cedar River Crossing Fieldtrip
We had eight birders on a wet walk at Cedar River Crossing this morning.
We even had a Virginia birder here for the Iowa/Ohio State game (rooting
for Ohio State). I think she saw her first Eurasian tree sparrow in North
America. The weather was absolutely beautiful. We had 43 species with
song, swamp, white throated, white crowned and Lincoln sparrows. Another
highlight was a couple of red breasted nut hatches. we ended up walking 1
1/2 miles covering the north and eastern sides of the property. The part of
the drainage where the Lecontes and Nelson’s sparrows usually are was
completely flooded and inaccessible. I’m not sure where we would find those
currently in Johnson County.
