We took a walk down to Dumas Bay Sanctuary here in Federal Way this
afternoon. Things were quite lively, but an adult -likely- Franklin’s Gull
was the most interesting. It had a dark/dirty back of the head, dark
mantel, incomplete eye ring and was a little bigger than the Bonaparte’s
Gulls. It was hanging out at the mouth of the creek flowing into the bay.
Also at Dumas were 200 or more Bonaparte’s Gulls, American Wigeons, Surf
Scoters, Short-billed Gulls and a single Ring-billed Gull. A Black-bellied
Plover flew in, landing right in front of us and showing its “dirty
armpits”. It joined a pair of Killdeer.
Good Birding!
