Hi all,
As everyone knows by now, this is a good time to be up in the mountains looking for things. I was up at Pacifico Mountain around sunset yesterday, birding a small patch of intact pine forest between 6600' and 7200'. Always a fun place to go birding. While I did not have Nutcrackers, Pinyon Jays or Evening Grosbeaks, there were a few interesting birds: - A small flock of 6 Pine Siskins silently flew over. These have been scarce for me in the county over the past 3 years. - Ruby-crowned Kinglets were moving through in good numbers. It was extremely buggy up there, and the kinglets and a few warblers were enjoying the bugs. - Several Red-breasted Nuthatches were present. There were likely more birds that were silent and hard to detect - Fox Sparrows were back in the chaparral in good numbers. I heard all three expected types, and several birds were singing at sunset. - Very unexpected was a Northern Pygmy-Owl at sunset.
-- Separately, I've found Clark's Nutcrackers and Pinyon Jays in a few places in the mountains and desert now (and also saw the one in Avalon the other day) - these birds are becoming old news. Still hoping to come across Evening Grosbeaks and Red Crossbills somewhere.
