If you're casting about for something birdy to do on Oct 11, consider taking part in The Big Sit <https://www.thebigsit.org/>! For those unfamiliar, the The Big Sit! was founded in New Haven, Connecticut in 1992 and is conducted annually for fun (internationally in fact). Without question, this is birding's most sedentary event (also designated The Big Snack by Neil, our local leader). Veteran devotees (NZ, AS, KS, AG, EC et al) will again be joining forces for an autumn dose of Community Science and Camaraderie over birds. We, the "South Meadowlarks" will take up our posts in the required 17-foot diameter circle, from pre-dawn until who-knows-when, on Sunday, October 11. The goal is to identify as many species as possible by sight and / or sound (to date, our team record is 60 species), and per the rules, participants cannot venture outside of that tiny 17-foot circle.
Come by for as short or as long a visit as you wish! We'll be at Discovery Park in the South Meadow (he, he) at the Sand Dunes (47°39'25.2"N 122°25'17.8"W), next to the bluff. We take up our post there starting at 6:00AM (for owls) and will persevere racking up species, seen or heard, for as long as we can manage (the rule is to confine the count to a 24 hour period).
We welcome your eyes and ears, encouragement, snacks, etc. Wave if you are sailing by on Elliott Bay, or clue us in to approaching Brown Pelicans or Shearwaters heading our way around West Point. Hope to see ya for some good birding and fellowship!
