This morning’s (Wednesday, Sep 29) Columbia Missourian newspaper has a
front-page article about University of Missouri graduate student Natalie
Ramos and her study of Whip-poor-wills in Missouri.
Among the many interesting aspects of her research and the clearly
precipitous decline of the species, these caught my eye as appropriate to
pass along via this venue:
1. It is important that we ,as birders, seek this and other
nocturnal species such as the Chuck-will’s-widow to provide data as to
their presence or absence at sites where they were once common. The article
noted they are most active between the first and third phase of the moon
(when there is the most moonlight), April-September.
2. Ramos’ research has been conducted in the Missouri Department of
Conservation’s eight Priority Geography Locations—precisely the areas the
CACHE agreement has prioritized for birding data collection in
“target/focus” sites. A list of sites lacking data for specific times is
an item in every monthly MBS eNews.
Our birding visits to these sites are especially valuable additions to
occurrence data.
3. The Missouri Birding Society’s Bauer Graduate Research
Scholarships provide support for ornithological research such as that being
conducted by Natalie Ramos.

“MBS is providing $4,000 which will be given to the applicant’s academic
institution, which shall monitor the award without receiving any facilities
and administration (indirect) fees. Funds from MBS’s Graduate Research
Scholarship are to be used in support of research or field work in
ornithology, or in an area of study that will directly benefit birds or
bird habitat. Graduate students enrolled at a Missouri university or
college are eligible to apply.”
Students should submit their application electronically (as a Word document
or in PDF format) to the MBS Scholarship Chair, Sarah Kendrick, at
<sarah_kendrick...> Faculty should submit their letters of
recommendation to the same email address. *All application materials must
be received by 5:00 pm CST on February 15, 2027.*
