After 14 years since the last one, I was thrilled on Friday to find a selasphorus hummingbird had arrived here at home sometime after we left for camp on Wed. Don had texted me that he saw a hummingbird and didn't think it was a ruby, but I wasn't getting too excited. When I got home I was walking up around the deck to the back door and he said, there it is ! I looked up to see it hovering around the flowers and then up to perch on the cherry. I didn't even need bins to see the rufous color that was so obvious. I'd like to think my hard work on having flowers available paid off but maybe it was just luck, who knows. Either way, I am happy that she (I guess it looks like an immature female) has stuck around and appears healthy. She's here regularly maybe every 20-30 minutes, using the flowers a lot and also the 2 feeders I have. She particularly uses the cuphea plant and the black and blue salvia. We'll see how long she stays.
Also Friday morning had a great walk around SGL 63 with a friend and had the first Lincoln's sparrows and assorted warblers including BT green, redstart, black-and-white, hooded, Cape May, magnolia,Tennessee, yellowthroat, bay-breasted, yellow-rumps and a couple of singing pine warblers. Saturday morning I had a decent thrush flight with 365 calls Swainson's, gray-cheeked and wood, along with a nice number of woodcocks coming in, 3 different birds. I also had two Swainson's on the ground on my walk later, they were calling back and forth, droplet and flight calls, as they fed up in the grapevines. Yesterday I had the first palm warblers arrive, four of them, and today on a brief walk I noticed a big push of white-throated sparrows arriving as well as the first golden-crowned kinglet and winter wren.
