I listened for flight calls both Thurs and Fri outside of Tidioute at our camp. This fall migration has seemed quite delayed to me, but with the weather change the middle of last week, I was optimistic on hearing a decent flight. Thurs I just had 48 calls, all Swainson's except for 3 gray-cheeked calls, but I did also hear the barred owl calling and a woodcock coming down into the field. Thursday night was great on radar and when I went out Fri morning the birds were already calling. It was cold at 39 and a little foggy, calm and clear though, and in 35 minutes the skies were filled with calls, always so thrilling to hear. I had around 885 calls in 35 minutes and there were more I'm sure I missed. The majority were Swainson's as usual, at least 20-25 gray-cheeked calls, and a couple wood thrush with one calling on the ground at the end. A couple scarlet tanager calls were noted and two barred owls were calling back and forth. It was a glorious start to a gorgeous fall day, more on the rest of the day in another post..
